FLY Mama helped me to recover from my birth and reconnect. I no longer feel like my body failed me.
They also helped me to understand and reduce my anxiety, overwhelm and rage. I can now manage these emotions and am not afraid of them.
Do you feel that you are not experiencing motherhood as you imagined because you are living with the physical and/or emotional fallout of your birth?
Disconnected or Overwhelmed
It is common to feel disconnected from others and/or yourself and to be overwhelmed by the whole situation.
Flashbacks or Nightmares
You might be experiencing PTSD after birth, reliving your difficult birth through flashbacks and nightmares.
Bonding with Baby
Your birth experience may have denied you the usual bonding process, or it may make you very scared to ever leave baby.
Feelings of Anger or Rage
It is not uncommon to have feelings of "maternal anger/rage," to wonder where it came from and also to feel guilt about having such feelings.
Pain, Scars and Tears
Perineal tears, C-section scars, pelvic organ prolapse/dysfunction, stress related physical symptoms etc serve as painful reminders.
Grief for Your Birth
There is often a sense of failure that the birth was not the one you planned or wanted and a grief for what was taken from you.
I thought I should be over it by now- my little boy was 4 but my emergency c-section birth still affected me. With the help of FLY Mama's support bundle, I was able to understand why I was still feeling triggered, learn tools to support me, process what had happened and move forward. It has been life-changing.
What is birth trauma?
Birth trauma encompasses the distress experienced by mothers before, during, or after childbirth.
While it can manifest physically, its impact is often emotional and psychological. It's crucial to acknowledge and honour your birth trauma, as societal expectations may overshadow the depth of your experience.
Many mothers silently carry the weight of birth trauma, hesitating to share their stories. Your journey is unique and valid, and there may be countless reasons why you have encountered birth trauma.
Studies suggest that up to 1 in 3 women face birth trauma in some capacity, with 1 in 25 mothers exhibiting signs of PTSD at 12 weeks postpartum.
Even if this happened sometime ago, it can often feel that it is still very present. You might not have initially recognized your birth as traumatic, but it's common to realize its impact later when you have the emotional and physical capacity to process your ordeal.
Remember, you're not alone on this journey, and there is support and understanding available to help you navigate your healing path.
Kelly's Story
Following the traumatic birth of my eldest daughter, I have a personal experience of the impact that it can have. I experienced hypervigilance which was exhausting, separation anxiety, anger, rage and low mood. I felt triggered by the birth stories of others and continually internalised the experience as being my fault, having an overwhelming feeling of failure. It affected my relationship with my baby, my partner, my family and myself (click arrow to read more)
